The area around Siam Square (Ratchaprasong and Phloen Chit Road) is the commercial center of Bangkok. Its full of fancy malls and hotels. It`s a good option if you are looking to do a lot of shopping. It`s also a good central location and the Skytrain intersection at Siam Square could be regarded as the centre of the city.

The area around Sukhumvit road is popular amongst expatriates and upper class locals. It is probably the area that has the most hotels in Bangkok. There are plenty of restaurants, bars and nightclub around, making it a good choice if you are looking to party at night. Popular nightclubs in this area include the Climax, the Supperclub and Q bar. The area also include a lot of naughty entertainment, particularly around Soi Cowboy and the infamous Nana Entertainment Plaza, hosting numerous ‘beer-bars’, go-go bars and massage parlors. There is a Skytrain that runs along Sukhumvit road, making getting around fairly easy.
The area around Silom Road and Sathorn Road is the financial centre of Bangkok and it hosts some of the more high-end hotels in Bangkok. This area is also a good location if you are looking to party at night, with the infamous Patpong area coming alive. Here you find a lot of sex shows, in the so called ‘ping-pong bars. During the day there is a big market where you can do shopping for low-priced products. Make sure you haggle over everything, you can usually get the price down to about 25-40% of the original asking price.
Between the river and downtown you will find the Rattanakosin area (also known as the “Old Bangkok”, home to the main tourist attractions in Bangkok such as the Grand Palace and the temple Wat Pho. On the northern part lies Khao San Road, the backpacker mecca of the city. Here you`ll find a lot of the cheaper hotels in Bangkok which makes it a good choice if you`re on a budget. This area is also quite lively at night, although most bars will close early around 1am. If you want to party later, you`ll have to get in a taxi or tuktuk to get to a nightclub.
Along Yaowarat Road lies Bangkok`s Chinatown and around Phahurat Road you will find the city’s sizable Indian community. This district is very multicultural filled with temples, shrines and street market. A good place to stay if you are into culture.
